Overview

Bilingual Astronomy Night @ SFSU

Come join us this Thursday night for a night of science talks, planetarium shows, and roof-top telescope observing!!  And bring some friends!

This month’s Noche de Estrellas event will feature Stanford Undergraduate, Leon Garcia.  Leon was inspired to study astronomy in the third grade while watching the Curiosity rover land on Mars.  Since then he has studied ring galaxies, magnetars, short gamma ray bursts, dark matter and now high-energy astrophysics.  For his public talk, he will be talking about the Moon, but feel free to come chat with him about that or one of his current interests like neutron stars, kilo novae, and the particles emitted by pulsars!

All about the Moon: Exploring the mysteries of our natural satellite

This talk is about the Moon, and I will begin with its critical role in regulating our climate and tides. Then, I will explain why the Moon has craters and that its lack of atmosphere preserves them for long periods of time. These craters are important for understanding the Moon's age and show that our Solar System is still evolving. I will end my talk by exploring several theories about how the Earth-Moon system formed.
